TIMELINE OF EVENTS 1980-1989


1980
- 27 February – HMAS Diamantina donated to QMMA.
- 29 February – HMAS Diamantina (K377) decommissioned.
- 1 October – HMAS Diamantina departs Sydney for Brisbane.
- 4 October HMAS Diamantina arrives in Brisbane.
- 4 April – HMAS Diamantina is placed into the South Brisbane Dry Dock.
- 22 September – QMM officially opened by His Excellency Sir James Ramsay, Governor of Queensland, and the 100th Anniversary of the opening of the South Brisbane Dry Dock.
- 24 April – A cocktail party was held in the ward room of the HMAS Diamantina by the QMMA members to celebrate the commissioning of the ship on 27 April 1945.
- April/May – Two stained glass windows bearing the Orient Line crest, from the old Orient Line building. Donated by Lend Lease Development.
- June – Pearling Lugger Penguin arrives at QMM carried from Thursday Island by HMAS Tobruk.

1983
- Bulwer Island Lighthouse transferred to the site of the QMM.
1984
- October – Northern area of the property relinquished to Expo and buildings.


1985
- QMM receives the Norman Pixley Maritime Collection from his bequested estate.
- Light Ship Carpentaria CL 2 retired from service and passed over to QMM.
1986
- 25 September – Two depth charge throwers arrived, for installation on board the HMAS Diamantina. They were donated by the Royal Canadian Navy, delivered by a squadron of three destroyers and handed over at Newstead Wharf.
- Two Carron “Clifton” Cannons handed over to QMM from the Qld Electricity Generation Board [QEGB] Bulimba “A” Power Station at the Riverside Park at Gibson Island. They were two of the four cannons placed there.
1987
- Two large Danforth-type anchors were donated to QMM. These were used as moorings to assist tanker berthing at Urangan Pier at Hervey Bay, Queensland after its closure in 1985.





1988
- 30 April – QMM becomes part of the Expo 88 Exposition with the Monorail terminating in the grounds.
- ST Forceful running river trips during Expo.
- 30 October – Expo 88 closes.
- After Expo 88, the Pavilion of Promise is given to the Queensland Maritime Museum.
1989
- Winifred Davenport Centre opened at QMM. Davenport was a distinguished naval architect with Qld Harbours and Marine and was also a noted historian and strong supporter of QMM.
