Cruising, the Australian Dream

More and more Australians are choosing to run away to sea for a dream holiday on a cruise ship. Promising exotic destinations, sumptuous dining, endless entertainment, or just idly watching the world go by, cruising has become the Australian dream.

The Museum’s exhibition “Cruising, the Australian Dream” captures both the allure of cruising and how cruising has changed and grown over the years.

Australians were first tempted by the dream of an ocean holiday in the 1930s, when shipping lines squeezed an exotic cruise in between their regular services.

Today, many cruise ships carry thousands on ocean adventures out of Australian ports, and they are far larger and more luxurious than anything that went before.

With stories, photos and artefacts from the Museum’s and private collections, this exhibition is bound to attract wide interest.

If you dream of cruising or fondly remember past voyages, come and see “Cruising, the Australian Dream” in the Queensland Maritime Museum’s Gallery 2.
