What’s in a Name
New exhibition in Gallery 2 of the Queensland Maritime Museum
Ships are recognised by their name. Some become famous, but each is unique, giving the ship identity with its own special story. The Museum’s “What’s in a Name” exhibition in Gallery 2 explores the many facets of ships’ names.
Geographical features have been named after ships and immigrant families have named children after the ship which carried them to their new home. To the sailor the ship’s name means belonging, home and the community of his or her shipmates.
From the naming of a ship at its launching, to the bells of vessels long gone, the ship’s name gives it a unique identity and story. National names, naming patterns, indigenous names, changing a ship’s name – these are just some of this exhibition’s fascinating insights into what’s in a ship’s name.
Through stories, photos and artefacts compiled by the library team, this exhibition is bound to stimulate interest and revive memories of that special voyage or your favourite ship.
Come and see the “What’s in a Name” display in the Museum’s Gallery 2 and enjoy the stories about ships’ names and the images these names will evoke.
