Mike Sobyra presents Battle of Coral Sea
A Queensland Maritime Museum Saturday Floor Talk by Mike Sobyra
The Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942 was a seminal moment in Australian and American relations. Ships of both navies fought side by side in a battle off the Queensland coast which saw the Japanese Navy suffer its first setback of the war. The occasion is remembered in the first week of May each year as a celebration of Australian American friendship. Commemorations often include goodwill visits to Australian ports by American warships.
