Capt. Kasper Kuiper presents JAVA 1942
A Queensland Maritime Museum Saturday Floor Talk
Photo: A frame taken from a motion picture film made onboard the IJN heavy cruiser ‘Tone’ 1st March 1942. The Japanese film frame shows the last moments of the aged USN destroyer USS ‘Edsall’ (DD-219), as dive bombers attack her south of Java, while the destroyer was attempting to evacuate from the port of Tjilatjap (Cilacap) to Fremantle.
The ‘Edsall’ was set upon by no less than two battleships, two heavy cruisers and two destroyers belonging to a patrolling carrier strike group that was sweeping the southern coast of Java for any Allied shipping. Through skillful seamanship, the plucky little ship evaded Japanese attempts to sink her for three hours. After firing over 1,300 rounds and scoring one possible direct hit, in frustration dive bombers from the two aircraft carriers were called in to finally dispatch with the Edsall.
