Diamantina – Sick Bay

This space was the ship’s hospital. For a ship the size of Diamantina, usually it would be under the care of a Sick Berth Attendant – with training similar to a modern paramedic. As Diamantina was senior naval ship during her Bougainville operations in support of the Australian Army and shore facilities were far from adequate, Commander Rose requested that a surgeon be appointed to the ship. As a result a Surgeon Lieutenant joined the crew.

Without a doctor, the Sick Berth Attendant had great responsibility for the health and well being of the crew and in the event of serious injury.

The sick bay is located near the centre of the ship, to minimise rocking from sea swell.

Sadly, they seemed to have left behind their last patient.
